If your people know you care about them, they will move mountains. In The Art of Caring Leadership: How Leading With Heart Uplifts Teams and Organizations, employee engagement and loyalty expert Heather R. Younger outlines nine key ways that leaders can ensure all their employees feel included and cared for.

Based on Younger’s interviews with over 80 leaders for her podcast, Leadership with Heart—including Howard Behar, former president of the Starbucks Coffee Company; Judith Scimone, senior vice president and chief talent officer at MetLife; Garry Ridge, CEO and chairman of the board of the WD-40 Company; and Shawnté Cox Holland, head of culture and engagement at Vanguard—this book shares how all of us have the ability to manifest the radical power of caring support at work, no matter what the context or circumstances.

Younger takes an often nebulous, subjective concept and makes it concrete and actionable—emphasizing that leaders have the power to change the lives of those they lead. They shouldn’t just “want” to care, they should see caring as imperative for the success of their employees and their organization. Though Younger stresses that this is not a cookie-cutter approach: just as Monet and Picasso expressed themselves very differently, each leader should express caring in their own unique, personal way.

Whether you’re looking for increased productivity, customer satisfaction, or employee engagement, Younger stresses that you need to care for your employees first.

The message?

People will go the extra mile for leaders who show they are genuinely concerned not only with what employees can do, but also with who they are and can become.

      About the author.

Heather Younger is a best-selling author, international speaker, consultant, adjunct organizational leadership professor, and facilitator who has earned her reputation as “The Employee Whisperer.” Her experiences as an entrepreneur, manager, attorney, writer, coach, listener, speaker, collaborator, and mother all lend themselves to a laser-focused clarity into what makes employees of organizations and companies—large and small—tick.

Heather discovered her passion for caring leadership early on. As the only child from an interracial and interfaith marriage, she was excluded by certain members of her family. While it left her with questions growing up, it also led her to develop resilience, self-love, and a deep desire to advocate for the voiceless and create opportunities for people worldwide to learn strategies to reframe their own adversities in order to lead more satisfying lives.

As a champion for positive change in workplaces, communities, and our world at large, Heather founded Employee Fanatix, a leading employee engagement and leadership development consulting and training firm, to inspire others by teaching the kind of caring leadership that drives real business results.

During her time as CEO and founder, Heather has facilitated more than 350 workshops, reaching more than 100 employers and their employees. Her motivation and philosophy has reached more than 20K attendees at her speaking engagements on large and small stages. Companies have charted their future course based on her focus groups, of which she has led nearly 100. In addition, she has helped companies see double-digit employee engagement score increases through implementation of her philosophies. She has driven results in a multitude of industries, including banking, oil and gas, construction, energy, and federal and local government.

Heather hosts the weekly podcast Leadership With Heart, which uncovers what drives leaders from all over the world and all walks of life to be more emotionally intelligent leaders. Her book The 7 Intuitive Laws of Employee Loyalty hit the FORBES Must-Reads list and is a go-to source for HR professionals and organizational leaders seeking insight into their organization’s dynamics. Heather is a member of the Society for Human Resources Management, is certified in Emotional and Social Intelligence, is a DiSC certified trainer and coach, and has a law degree from the University of Colorado Boulder Colorado Law school.

Heather lives in Aurora, Colorado, with her husband and four children. She enjoys hanging around with her crew. You may also find her trying to sneak into a movie all by herself for some peace and quiet.
